Posted: Sun Feb 05, 2006 8:16 pm Post subject: VideoCard fan Dying? |
|
|
For the past few weeks, my videocard's fan has been making a very loud hum sound. It happens at random times and stops when I shut down the PC and turn the fan with my fingers. I've read on a few sites that the video card's fan (Arctic Cooling Silencer) has a tendency of dying after a few months of service. I'd hate to have to buy another video card because the one I have costed $400. Any suggestions on how to fix this? |

Thanks for the help guys!
I think I managed to find the problem, turns out it wasn't a dying fan. It appears that it was getting a little loose, fixed it by pushing the fan up a bit and it stopped. Very strange. :? |

If you are still having problems..there are cooling units that they sell that replace the fan.

this one is made for the x800 or x850 |

GPU cooling..........for the most part I find "stock" coolers to be junk, susceptible to short lives and inefficiency.
If and when it comes time to replace your cooler give Zalman a look see. |

I have to agree with you when it comes to most stock cooling devices. Thats why I got this video card because it had a pre-built Arctic Cooling fan and heatsink. Hearing that it was a pretty good cooler, I couldn't help myself into getting it. |

God damn! It happened again after I turned on my PC after a two-day shut-off. It seems that it gets loose when it's not running which is really odd. I'll look into this issue more, but if anyone can clarify on why this happens, let me know. |

Jake I hope your using thermal paste, my son got a new game and it was locking up.I checked the temp on the xt9800 it was 90 c. !! way to hot.
I took off the fan, 2 screws had the spring one screw was solid. I got some artic silver and reapplied the heat sink-fan and I added a small fan over the top of the video card. Now it running at 70c I even got it over clocked since it’s running so cool. I hear it’s good to reapply the thermal past from time to time. about the screws coming lose I would see if your getting a good seat from the heat sink to the vidio cpu I guess you could use a small amount of threadlock but I don’t see why you would need that. _________________

Never had to apply any thermal paste. The video card stays at a stable 30 degrees. I've never seen it overheat or go over 45 degrees. |

30 c is 86 f. sounds to cool to be true. It's the connection from the fan to the heat sink that getting lose. ? _________________

I may be wrong on how warm it gets, but the program I used to check said that (I don't have the program anymore and can't remember the name). I'm not sure if it's the connection that's getting loose or not, I'll have to take a look if it happens again. |
